Nintai: Origami-Inspired Geometric Dresses

These dresses were created by Uruguay based designers Mercedes Arocena and Lucia Benitez for their thesis project. During their research about generations of civilizations they discovered that most garments were built out of rectangles and squares. That lead them to creating this line, “Nintai”–patience in Japanese, which utilizes geometrical figures as the basis of development for these origami-inspired dresses. Their collection uses the aspects of origami such as folding, creasing and building of the structures out of rectangles and patterns without the use of paper.

New Platonic

Benja Harney, Australian based paper artist, has a new series of exploration in paper surrounding Platonic Solids. His latest exhibition encompassed making these forms with the use of paper only and NO GLUE! Each miniature paper crafted object interlocks into one another creating stunning patterns. Be sure to check out our interview with Benja as well, he is quite a talented individual if I do say so myself.

Tomás Saraceno: Cloudy House

In 2009 Andersen’s Contemporary in Berlin presented Tomás Saraceno’s Cloudy House, an exhibition comprising a cloud installation, sculpture, video and photographs.
Saraceno suspended numerous geometric clouds made from white matte paper in various heights, some floating above the viewer’s head, others group together under the ceiling.
“Tomás Saraceno’s experimental works explore concrete visionary urban-planning and question our relationship to nature and natural phenomena on a truly global scale. His sculptures often resemble networks of floating cells or suspended habitats, including airborne gardens, floating bridges and large-scale models for futuristic dwellings. Combining visual elegance with determined and purposeful engineering, Saraceno’s ethereal sculptures challenge our experience of the three ecologies: the environment, human subjectivity and the social landscape (Guattari).” —andersenscontemporary.dk

Cardboard Installations in NYC by Clemens Behr

I love geometrical forms in general, but then having them built with low budget materials such as cardboard then having them displayed in the streets of New York just makes these sculptures look so bizarre, beautiful and sexy. Alienated extensions of the city that just seem to naturally grow and bloom in the streets and on the roofs. What you can see here are several uncommissioned public installations done in 2011 by fantastic Clemens Behr in the East Village, China Town, Soho and Brooklyn. Continue reading
