Fu Xiaotong Creates Detailed Illustrations From Thousands of Tiny Holes In Paper April 22, 2017 – June 17, 2017

Born in Shanxi, Fu Xiaotong has achieved wide acclaim for her remarkable works on thick sheets of hand-made Xuan that has been paper perforated with a needle until images of subjects such as mountain ranges and powerful waves emerge from the accumulation of holes. Her latest paper works feature cellular structures and even a skull emerges from hundreds of thousands of pinpricks. Her works can be found on display at Chambers Fine Art through June 17, 2017.

Li Hongbo Tools Of Study Solo Exhibition at Klein Sun Gallery

There has been a lot of buzz around the interwebs lately about Chinese paper artist Li Hongbo and last week I had the privilege of visiting this must see exhibition of his exquisite and remarkable accordion-like paper statues, in person. Li Hongbo debuting his first solo exhibition in the United States entitled "Tools of Study" which showcases a large series of statues that are recreations of famed masterpieces. Upon first glance, one would think that these sculptures are made from some sort of cast, or possibly a smoothed porcelain, when in fact they are made from thousands of layers of paper.

In this series created by Chinese artist Liu Wei, he has taken a large amount of schoolbooks and carved them to depict cities in a state of metamorphosis. Sometimes within the architecture, iconic buildings are shown, from the Pentagon to Saint Peter's Basilica.

Very reminiscent to embroidered patchwork, this series cuts apart and reconfigures currencies from countries around the world in the hopes of examining identity and cultural desires that link wealth, branding, human expressions and ethnicities.
