Carved Encyclopedias Transformed Into Dada-Inspired Sculptures

Carved Encyclopedias Transformed Dada-Inspired Sculptures

Originally from Chicago and now living and working in Atlanta, Brian Dettmer, aka the book surgeon, is known for his detailed and innovative sculptures with books and other forms of antiquated media and this wonderful series is his latest in Dada-inspired carved works. These sculptures are made from old encyclopedias, a medium nearing extinction, with their pages of data carved into intricate photomontages reminiscent of Dada artists like Hannah Hoch.

The creation of these works is a subtractive process. With the use of a scalpel, Dettmer excavates images and words printed in these mid-century texts like an archaeologist and presents them as if historical artifacts. This metaphor becomes almost literal in some of these pieces, as they are from doctored ancient history books, giving the impression that Dettmer has dug up pictures of ancient Greek and Egyptian art.

It could all just feel just like a jumbled mess of random juxtapositions if it weren’t for Dettmer’s astounding attention to detail, technical skill and eye for composition. These beautiful images and phrases combine layer by layer, so that you literally visualize what reading can feel like, the inner workings of books. Dettmer’s book art lets you imagine, for a second, that some kind of divine harmony hides underneath the information overload.
