Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, with a deep passion for art and nature, Nicole Grosjean pursued her dreams driven by the artistic sensibilities instilled in her by her mother, a sign artist. Through this appreciation for her mother’s craft, she discovered a newfound love for craftsmanship and painting that drove her into an artistic career. In this mythical series, featuring creatures such as dragons, a kirin and unicorn, her works consists of watercolor and gouache on cut paper, carefully layered inside vintage pocket watches. Nicole was kind enough to make a beautiful dragon (pictured above) specifically for this post, a dragon within a lotus flower.

Nicole graduated with a degree in illustration from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Denver, Colorado in 2008. After working primarily in digital mediums using Photoshop and a graphics tablet upon graduating, she went to work for a ceramic jewelry artist and gallery owner. She then honed her painting skills, painting patterns on the ceramic jewelry. It is only as of the last year that she had started painting her own works in traditional mediums.

“I think my first introduction to cut paper was the work of Brittney Lee, then later Helen Musselwhite, Zim & Zou, and Hari & Deepti. I knew that was the direction I wanted to go, but I also wanted to incorporate more painted elements. Over the last year I’ve been experimenting and refining my technique. “- Nicole Grosjean

“As far as process goes, I start with loose sketches and work it up to a final drawing. I then transfer the drawing to watercolor paper in multiple pieces, then cut, layer and glue them together. I lay down my colors and values in watercolor then finish the painting in gouache. I also add gold and white gold leaf to some pieces.” – Nicole Grosjean

One of her newest pieces, ‘Never Tamed’ that features a medieval-style unicorn, was recently selected to be published in the ‘ArtOrder Invitational: The Journal’ art book in the ‘salon’ section. She is currently working on more pocket watches, some commission work, and several gallery pieces. She also has watches available for purchase through Helikon Gallery in Denver, Colorado. Additionally, I am in the process of having prints made and will offer them for sale soon, so stay tuned.
