Into the Water: Paper Cut Illustrations by Sonia Alins

Spanish artist Sonia Alins has created this wonderfully surreal paper cut illustration series entitled Into the Water (Dones d’Aigua) featuring several women with exaggerated proportions floating, and some even appear to be dancing, in the water. Sonia uses watercolored paper for the backdrop, where these figures are then drawn with ink, cut and placed on a semitransparent paper that serves as the top layer of water, sometimes also with the use of wool underneath for added texture and depth. They stay afloat in this aquatic environment, with only some parts shown above the water level. Her use of these mixed media elements really adds to the surrealism and poetry of the piece itself. This Dones d’aigua series showcases the dramatic intensity, and intimate experiences wrapped in a metaphorical, allegorical and surreal atmosphere.
