Inspired by traditional scientific drawing and model making, Rogan Brown creates these astonishingly intricate organic sculptures out of layered hand cut paper. Each sculpture itself is extremely time consuming and labor-intensive, where he chose to work with paper as a medium to capture the mixture of delicacy and durability that characterizes certain aspects of nature.
“I want to communicate my fascination with the immense complexity and intricacy of natural forms,” says Rogan. The basis of his pieces are sought through patterns and repeated motifs that occur within different scales, from microscopic to individual cells or large geological formations.
“…although my approach involves careful observation and detailed “scientific” preparatory drawings these are always superseded by the work of the imagination; everything has to be refracted through the prism of the imagination, estranged and in some way transformed.” — Rogan Brown
